Cette thèse analyse les raisons pour lesquelles la théosophie est devenue si importante en Grande-Bretagne pendant la période fin-de-siècle, et pourquoi il s'agissait d’un mouvement occulte unique en son genre. La Société théosophique était un mouvement occulte des Etats-Unis qui a vu le jour en 1875 et qui est arrive en Grande-Bretagne en 1878. proclamé au départ que la théosophie était une religion en soi, et elle montre que la théosophie a été un mélange de diverses sagesses et de principes religieux. La raison pour laquelle la théosophie était si différente des autres mouvements occultes est qu’elle s'inspirait de la sagesse orientale et qu’elle mettait fortement l'accent sur la science. La théosophie a également réussi a influencer de nombreux mouvements sociaux tels que l'anticolonialisme et le féminisme. La popularité de la théosophie est liée au contexte de la fin du 19ème siècle. Le spiritisme a perdu sa popularité en tant que principal mouvement occulte et la théosophie a été considérée comme une nouvelle alternative spirituelle.

This thesis analyses why Theosophy became so important in Britain during the fin-desiècle period and why it was such a unique occult movement. The Theosophical Society was an occult movement from the United States that started in 1875 and arrived in Britain in 1878. The thesis starts with the different definitions of theosophy. The Theosophical Society did not initially proclaim theosophy as a religion in itself, and it shows that theosophy was a melting pot of various wisdom traditions and religious tenets. The reason why theosophy was so different from other occult movements, was because it was inspired by Eastern wisdom and its had a strong emphasis on science. Theosophy also managed to influence many social
movements such as anti-colonialism and feminism. The popularity of theosophy was related with the context of the end of the 19th century. Spiritualism lost its popularity as the main occult movement and theosophy was seen as a new spiritual alternative.
